Carnival Time

EMMARENTIA - It’s not only the Brazilians who get to party – Joburg’s enormous Gauteng Carnival will be brightening up the streets of Auckland Park, Melville and Emmarentia on 6 September

Put on your party clothes and get ready to marvel Johannesburg! The Gauteng carnival – featuring a whopping 20 000 participants – will be hitting the streets on 6 September.

This year’s Carnival starts at 11am from the University of Johannesburg’s Sport Complex in Bunting road, and this vibrant procession will be winding through Melville towards the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia.

Acrobats, dancers, musicians, amazing costumes and large floats will tell the story of the journey of South Africa over the last 20 years, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and RecreationNomazwe Ntlokwana said.

Preparation for the carnival has been ongoing since April – with choregraphers preparing dance troupes, seamstresses sewing costumes and welders getting a head-start on the floats.
The main parade will be preceded by a 4km schools parade starting at Milpark Primary School featuring 6500 school pupils.

“Since its establishment the carnival has been about the promotion of the arts, promotion of social cohesion, creation of job opportunities and imparting of skills where thousands of jobs have been created”, Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Ms Molebatsi Bopape said.

The celebrations of the Gauteng Carnival are not just restricted to the day time. A number of acrobats, brass bands, clowns, dancers, fire eaters, jesters etc. will be seen performing in the streets. It’s also completely free to attend.
The public is invited to line up the streets in the morning to see the spectacular show, and also to attend the music from 2pm at the Botanical gardens with various artists including Casper Nyovest and the Muses.
