Movies under the moon

BRIXTON - It was a surreal experience for moviegoers in Brixton's alleyways.

The buttery smell of free popcorn pervaded the air, and sticky fingers clutched candyfloss as moviegoers watched the show in the recently cleaned up alley.

This was Brixton’s Movies under the Moon in the alleyway, hosted by the Brixton Community Forum (BCF.) The premise of the event was to clean up Brixton’s filthy alleys, and then to watch movies.

“It was a surreal experience,” René van Niekerk, one of Brixton Communities well-knowns said. “It was quite incredible.”

“Johannesburg’s Residen’ts Association and Pikitup actually cleaned up the alley a week before,” Mark Schaerer of the Brixton Community forum said.

“We just did a little cleaning before we enjoyed our movie.”

The idea to host the screening in the alley came from recent crime in the area. “The alleyways were seen as spaces that attract crime and rubbish, and this initiative will hopefully reduce crime,” Schaerer said.

This was the sixth outdoor movie hosted by BCF , and those attending were treated to the African movie Lucky.
