Massive dance music festival heads to Joburg

JOBURG - Party animals, brace yourselves for the world's premier electronic music event, the Ultra Music Festival, which will come to town this February.

The globally-famed festival, which is to take place at the Nasrec Showgrounds, boasts a line-up of some of the hottest names in dance music, including DJ megastars Tiesto, Afrojack, Krewella and Nicky Romero.

Event promoter Kelly Atherton said the festival would be “the first, and by far the biggest, event of its kind to hit the African continent”.

“Headlining the entire event will be none other than Tiesto. A firm favourite with Ultra fans across the world, and… one of the planet’s most in-demand DJs, Tiesto will be supported by fellow countrymen Nicky Romero and chart-topping duo W&W,” said Atherton.

“Flying the flag for Sweden will be 22-year-old superstar Alesso, while Chicago-based trio Krewella look set to provide the much-needed injection of bass to proceedings.”

Some of South Africa’s finest talent will also make their mark at the festival, such as Cape Town-based duo Goldfish, underground house star Black Coffee, and the three-piece outfit Mi Casa. “Last, but by no means least, legendary house music partners DJ Fresh and Euphonik will step up to represent South Africa in style,” said Atherton.

The South African festival will be the eighth international edition of the Miami super-festival. In its 15-year history, Ultra has established gargantuan dance events in Miami, Argentina, Chile, Croatia, Brazil, Korea and Ibiza.

Founder, executive producer and CEO of the festival, Russell Faibisch, could barely contain his excitement at the inaugural South African event.

“South Africa is… one of the most burgeoning territories in the world when it comes to their ever-growing enthusiasm towards electronic music. Their demand for world-class electronic acts has become overwhelming, and the infrastructure in place to put on an event like [this] is healthier than it has ever been,” he said.

“This thriving scene, coupled with the… fact that the two venues we’ve found [in Johannesburg and Cape Town] for the first edition are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever come across, made the decision to expand into Africa an extremely exciting one.”

Ultra South Africa will take place on 15 February at the Nasrec Showgrounds from 12pm.
