Paddlers take to the water

Paddlers from canoe clubs across the province will take part in a series of races in the next few months.

Two Dabulamnzi Canoe Club paddlers showed their competitive streak at a recently held marathon.

The marathon was set up by clubs affiliated with the Gauteng Canoe Union and is a series of flat water races that will be hosted by various clubs throughout the province. Its main aim is to provide the opportunity for team selection to international competitions that will take place in the year.

Paddlers from the Emmarentia-based club, Clint Cook and Bradley Boulle showed they were in it for the win as soon as they jumped out of their boats and onto the bank. They both maneuvered a smooth portage with their boats on land before making it back into the water to continue the race.

This race, which was held at Florida Lake Canoe Club, was the first of a series of races. The next race will take place at Wemmer Pan Rowing Club, followed by races in May that will take place in Centurion and Germiston Lakes, as well as Emmarentia Dam.

The series includes races for children up to the age of 12 years, as well as short distance, 10km race, for U14 and less fit older paddlers, as well as a 20km long tough slog for those fit enough to enjoy the challenge.

The final event will be the Gauteng Canoe Union Championships and will be hosted at the East Rand Kayak Club in Boksburg on June 3 and 4.
