Young cricketers (16) do their best to balance school and sport

Young cricketers struggle to balance demanding school and cricket commitments.

Morteza Manack and Zain Jansen comment:

We are both 16 years old, yet we play in the Premier A League, Joburg’s toughest cricket competition.

We love Marks Park Cricket Club and have seen how the level of cricket is much higher than the school level. It has really helped us improve.

But balancing time between school and cricket is difficult.

We play cricket seven days a week because we love the sport and want to go as far as we can in it.

We practice from Monday to Friday and have matches on the weekend.

If we could change anything, we would decrease how much homework we get.

Every teacher gives us homework every day and there are assignments every week, so it is a lot to do.

I, Morteza, do as much of this as I can while I am still at school so that by the time the bell rings I have less to do at home.

I, Zain, would also like to see the school days shortened.

We are at school for a long time and then by the time we can go do homework or play cricket it is already afternoon.

Playing cricket at a club is much more challenging and worthwhile, but schools need to understand we have this commitment.
