Winter festival to bring the school community spirit
The De La Salle Holy Cross College Alumni Association hosted a festival that had past learners and parents.
De La Salle Holy Cross College Alumni Association recently hosted a Winter Sports Festival at the school.
Formally established some years ago, the association’s intention is described as one that aims to be a support structure that brings past learners and parents together as part of the broader school community.
Association member Bridget Munyembate said on the day, basketball, netball, hockey and rugby matches were played. Forming these teams were parents, and former learners, some even forming teams of players from the same matric year.
The association feels these events are important because past learners are part of the school community for 12 years and thereafter that falls away, with them studying further and later going into the work environment. “So that sense of belonging sometimes does go missing and that’s was this association is for,” she added.
Munyembate said some people have had great experiences at school and were part of its community for a good part of their lives, and the association allowed them to come back to the school and give back to it in whatever way they could.
The point of this particular event was not to raise funds but rather to further bring the community together. “The association’s last big fundraiser was the ‘Come back give back dance’ which immediately followed the school’s matric dance and this fundraising initiative allows for us to support the school in various ways.”
