Sparrow School in Sophiatown versus the All Blacks in Emmarentia

The Protea Sports Club hopes to bring younger players and more diversity to the game they love so much.

The Protea Sports Club in Emmarentia has hosted its second group of schoolchildren to learn about playing bowls.

The project spearheaded by their winning team, the All Blacks, is aimed at encouraging younger players and diversity to the sport.

Brixton Primary School learners ventured onto the manicured bowling green in Emmarentia last month.

Sparrow School in Sophiatown then had their turn to play the game many had never heard of.

Bowler at the club Laurence Makyao said, “We want children to learn about this amazing game and to give them a fun day out with something different to experience. It is also a fun sport for people who do not like more active sports like soccer or rugby.”

“We hope this project will continue to grow as more learners visit us and perhaps we can even hold some friendly competitions in the future between schools.”

Johannesburg Bowls Association (JBA) member Grant Dreyer said as he watched the Brixton learners play, “We have wanted to implement something involving schoolchildren for a long time, so we were delighted to hear the All Blacks had managed to achieve this on their own. It is fantastic and something the JBA absolutely supports and encourages. The values and outcomes are in line with our own and the Department of Education’s so it is a win-win for everyone.”
