New Northcliff Tennis Club hopes to grow membership

The relaxed and social club has players across the board in terms of age and skill levels so anyone who enjoys the sport will feel right at home.

The New Northcliff Tennis Club is certainly not new – it was formed in 1957 and has continued to be a place where club members and visitors come to enjoy their love of tennis and to socialise in a relaxed environment.

Amanda Silber has been a member for eight years and loves having somewhere to go and spend time with people she now calls friends. “There are players of all levels and ages at the club which ensures everyone can have fun while playing, although we do not compete at league level.”

While there is an active following, they hope for new members to join the club and invite people to pop in and spend some time with them to see if they would like to join.

Carol Penny likes the informal feeling of the club and says, “My favourite days of the week are those when I come here, play some tennis to keep fit and spend time with people I really enjoy being around.”

People play tennis every Tuesday and Friday mornings on the five well-maintained courts, and there is a monthly braai on a Sunday to foster camaraderie between members and visitors.

Younger players are catered for in the afternoons when coaches George Rudman and Philp Lawson mentor children who are keen on the sport.

There is even a bridge club that meets on Monday afternoons, so there is no shortage of activity on the humble grounds near the Berario Recreation Centre.

Members pay a nominal annual fee to join while visitors contribute R30 per day.
