The journey of two rivers

EMMARENTIA – We talk to local canoeist as she recounts her first experience of taking part in the Dusi Canoe Marathon.

After spending three days navigating the uMsundusi and uMgeni rivers, first-time Dusi Canoe Marathon participant and local girl Elandrie Zietsman shared her intrepid paddle.

It was only after sharing a few drinks with friends at Dabulamnzi Canoe Club one evening, that Zietsman made a pact to take part in the Dusi this year from February 17 to 19. Who knew that commitment to this pact would have her place 87th overall, seventh in mixed doubles and second in her age category.

Zietsman partnered with Clint Cook in the K2 category. She said when Cook offered to paddle with her, she couldn’t say no because of his paddling prowess.

“The Dusi is a tough race with many different challenges throughout all three days, however, I loved every second of it. The race was well organised and the weekend was packed full of comradeship with all paddlers and seconders.”

She added she didn’t encounter any real challenges throughout the three days, barring fitness levels. “We went in to have fun and do some sightseeing. We took our time on portages, had zero swims though I am a bit disappointed for not being as fit as I could be.”

By the end of the first day, they realised they stood a chance of being in the top 100 and with this in mind, they pushed hard on the second day to finish 114th. On the third day, they knew they had to push even harder and they did, placing 87th overall.

“A great achievement for a first Dusi, thanks to my partner Clint. If I only knew it was a possibility I would’ve wanted to be a bit stronger on my running on day one for a chance to maybe get a podium.”

Thankfully, there is always next year for her to get to her desired fitness levels.
