Local paddlers take on the big sea

EMMARENTIA – These Dabulamanzi Canoe Club paddlers took part in a gruelling four day paddling event that started in Gqeberha.

The Port Elizabeth to East London Challenge took place from December 1 to and it included some of our own Dabulamanzi Canoe Club paddlers.

The event spanned 260km over four days.

Raoul Goosen, Jim Tait and Lloyde Hanson of the canoe club finished the event in 23 hours 42 minutes. This was Hanson’s first time and the team placed 33rd out of 53 boats that finished.

“There is almost nothing better than completing the challenge as not many did… out in the big sea, at times up to eight hours, you feel that you may be ‘finished’ so it’s satisfying to get to the end,” said Goosen

Fellow club paddlers Mal Moolies, Gerhard Moolman and Luke Symonds came in the top 20 while Mark Torrington, an honorary Dabs member, paddled for 28 hours. This was said to be an amazing show of willpower, especially that it was on his 60th birthday.
