Medals galore for Bears Wrestling Club

EMMARENTIA – Four-year-old club wins big at nationals.


Marks Park’s very own Bears Wrestling Club participated in the annual South African Wrestling Federation Nationals in Pretoria recently and were successful on many fronts.

In a tournament featuring wrestling clubs from all provinces, the club had nine of their members participating.
Spokesperson for the club Bianca Taljaard said, “At Bears Wrestling we are extremely proud of our wrestlers for obtaining such great achievements after only four years as there were over 900 wrestlers who entered for the nationals.”

The club’s Marisan Grové won two gold medals in the U15 Female Freestyle and President Junior Freestyle while Hannes Hattingh won a gold medal in the Veterans 88kg category. Mieke Grové won two silver medals in the U15 Female Freestyle and President Junior Freestyle and Luan Homan also won a silver medal in the U9 Freestyle. Micha’el Homan won a bronze medal in the U10 Freestyle.

Gerrie Grové finished in fourth place in the U15 Greco-Roman and Presidents Junior Freestyle. Wikus de Kock attained a fifth-place finish in the U11 Freestyle and Ruben Kruger achieved sixth place in the U11 freestyle. James Geekie also participated in the nationals while Donovan Davel and Taljaard, two of the clubs’ referees also participated in the event and were graded.
The club is looking forward to their next tournaments and hope to return home with more medals and valuable experience.
