A call for those looking for a new experience

The only bowls club with all black players in the Johannesburg Bowls Association is opening its doors to recruit new members.

Emmarentia’s very own Protea Bowling Club All Blacks (which consists of all black players) is actively looking to attract new players to their teams as they continue to compete in the Johannesburg Bowls Association’s (JBA) Saturday League.

The club’s Lawrence Mokgoa, Wiskey Mushwana, Jacob Utlwanang Moutloatse, Lucas Mpodu and Thomas Tshikos say they are inviting anyone to join, regardless of race, gender, age and so on but would love to attract more black people within the community. Mokgoa said, “Not a lot of people in our communities back home know this sport. We are only exposed to the big sports like soccer but this is a game that anyone can enjoy, black or white, young or old, man or woman.”

The team, which branded itself as confident, disciplined, energetic and vibrant, has guaranteed that it would be a joyful experience for anyone who gives it the necessary energy and commitment. Team Captain Mushwana gave an insight into the culture of the team, “Because we work so hard at being better, we end up putting a lot of emotion into our performances. When we lose it’s very tense among us because we all know we could’ve done better but when we win it’s like we could all fly. We push ourselves to have that feeling of flying as much as possible.”

Mpodu also shared that the sport doesn’t require a lot of physicality, “It’s a great sport because it’s a relaxed yet competitive sport that needs skills and strategy. It’s also low impact and at a slower pace so anyone can compete and be among the best.”
