Dabulamanzi paddlers get ready for the South African School Sprint Championships

EMMARENTIA – Dabulamanzi paddler’s performance enables them for selection for the Gauteng Sprint Championships team.


Gauteng Canoe Union hosted the prestigious Sprint Championships recently at Victoria Lake Canoe Club based at Germiston Lake.

The competition was hosted to enable selections for the Gauteng Sprint Team that will participate in the South African School Sprint Championships. This was according to Gauteng Canoe Union spokesperson Jennie Dallas who added that paddlers of Dabulamanzi Canoe Club based at Emmarentia Dam also participated in the competition.

She said the club’s Katie Foulds won the U12 200m race and U16’s Tome dos Santos, Theo Dreyer, Sean van der Westhuizen and Luke Salmon, performed well on the day. The club’s U18’s Connor Erwee, Eben van der Westhuizen and Gareth Barberton and U10’s Jurjen Powell, Joshua Powell and Alessandro Hajem also did extremely well.

Dallas added, “The event also provided points for those participating in the Gauteng Canoe Union School League races which accumulate in an annual prize-giving and distances raced were the 200m and 500m within the sprint lanes. All ages from U8 through to 80 years old participated in the prestigious event and it was much enjoyed as races in the previous year and had been curtailed due to Covid-19 restrictions.”

The South African School Sprint Championships will take place at Shongweni Dam in KwaZulu-Natal at the end of March.
