Roosevelt Park Bowling Club places top at JBA Singles

ROOSEVELT PARK – Two of the clubs players won coveted titles in their respect categories.


Roosevelt Park Bowling Club bowlers Debbie Phillips and Jason Evans set a new club record recently when they won the JBA Singles Open Women’s and Men’s titles respectively.

The tournament was held at Belgravia Bowling Club.This was Phillips’ first win in the women’s singles after she defeated the well-respected Esme Haley of Linden Bowls Club. This was a marathon match which lasted 27 ends. It went down to the final bowl of the last end with Phillips emerging victorious, and the crowd at Belgravia and those watching online could finally release their collective breath. For Phillips, playing against an accomplished playing such as Haley compelled her to keep a level head while keeping her nerves at bay. The champion has been playing the sport for the past eight years after she was introduced to it by her friends.

“I love that the sport can be both social and competitive,” she said. She added on match day she was focused, a trait she hoped would stand her in good stead in the upcoming JBA Women’s Pairs on 11 April at Old Parks where she will play in the quarter-finals. For Evans, it was a victory in more ways than one, as it was also his fifth JBA Men’s Singles win in five straight years.

He was up against Victor Siphale of Bryanston Sports Club, a steady player who is a force to be reckoned with. Evans has been bowling for the past 11 years and has been victorious locally and internationally, winning highly sort after titles on numerous occasions. In the JBA Men’s Pairs on 11 April, he will play with his 18-year-old son, an event they are both looking forward to.

“I see this has a great bonding experience for us,” he said. In August, Evans will compete in the South African Masters, a singles tournament that will see the country’s top 16 players go head to head. For the Roosevelt club it was an excellent day of bowls and the results were something that did not happen too often in the sport.
