Alan Toweel’s Linden boxers not perturbed by loss

LINDEN – Local boxers, especially two featherweights, gear up for important fights.

Although Jeffrey Magagane lost on a split decision to Sthembiso Maduna for the African Boxing Union SADC featherweight title, this does not stop Linden’s Alan Toweel Boxing Gym from moving forward.

The fight was held in Durban on 27 February, and another Linden fighter in heavyweight Wilhelm Nebe was supposed to fight against Stanis Mboyo of Congo in his fifth professional fight at the same event. But Nebe’s fight was postponed.

Toweel’s protégé Tshifhiwa Munyai, the current SA lightweight champion will defend his title on 26 March at the Sandton Convention Centre against mandatory challenger Khaya Busakwa. On the same bill, Toweel’s Rofhiwa Nemushungwa will fight an eight-rounder in the bantamweight division against Sbonisa Gonya.

Also, newcomer Trevor Nghonyama will engage in his third professional fight, hoping to keep his unbeaten record intact. Munyai won the SA title at the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre in March last year and hopes to retain his title against the current Gauteng Champion, Busakwa, at the compulsory contest. The fight will be televised live on SABC 2.

For Magagane, who many boxing pundits felt deserved the win after the split decision, a rematch has been requested to settle the score once and for all.
