Cricketers happy to be playing last man stands again

SAXONWOLD – LMS cricket leagues are again on the go at venues around Joburg.

Last man stands cricket is once more being played at at Zoo Lake Sports Club, Marks Park Sports Club, Old Eds, and Wendywood and Sandringham high schools.

The current season was supposed to finish in April but the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown put a holt to the game until government gave the go-ahead in mid September.

A weekend of friendly matches were held before the Saturday 1 and 2 league finals were held and the Sunday leagues began anew.

“Everyone is happy to be back, they could not wait to play again,” said Last man stands cricket’s Joburg manager, Owen Chitsinho between matches at Marks Park.

“We still have spaces for people to join our leagues and I would invite anyone interested to do so. It is a good time to play because it is safe and you will have a jol outdoors.”

Players and spectators are screened and have their temperatures taken upon arrival at the venues.

“Guys can join as a team or sign up and we will put you in a team. This is a social league and anyone can play It’s about having fun but of course some people are out to win. That is why we have different leagues for the competitive and more social sides.”

A night league will also start shortly and Chitsinho looks forward to hosting the South African Championships at Marks Park in December.

Teams from all over the country will play and competitive and social teams are welcome to enter in the different divisions.

There are separate awards for the main cup and ‘cow’s corner’, a more social division.

Winners of these respective divisions will gain access to the World Championships in Cape Town next year.
