Run Zone Athletics Club fields 445 runners in Race the Comrades Legends

NORTHCLIFF – The race saw people from all over the country run 5km, 10km, 21km, 45km or 90km and compare their times with the likes of Bruce Fordyce, Frith van der Merwe and Samuel Tshabalala.

Gauteng’s largest running club had a blast when it became time for the Race the Comrades Legends run.

The virtual run was held by the Comrades Marathon Association on 14 June after South Africa’s most popular ultramarathon was postponed. It saw people from all over the country run 5km, 10km, 21km, 45km or 90km anywhere they liked, compare their times with the likes of Bruce Fordyce, Frith van der Merwe,Samuel Tshabalala, and earn a real Comrades medal. Northcliff-based Run Zone Athletics Club fielded a whopping 445 entries for the virtual event.
Eight of the running club’s members ran the full 90km. Juliana Ambriosi finished first in the Run Zone women’s 90km category, in a time of 09:42:28. Imraan Abbas, finished first place in the men’s 90km category, in just of 08:45:48. This virtual run was just another in a series of challenges the running club has held for its members during the lockdown.”

In the lockdown we have had good feedback on the challenges we have held,” said the running club’s owner and chairperson, Graham Block.”People have been motivated by the challenges and are keeping fit and positive.”
