Kinetik Tennis Academy keeps moving

FAIRLAND – Tennis players maintain momentum with Kinetik Tennis Academy during the lockdown.

The courts are currently empty at Fairland Tennis Club, but members of its Kinetik Tennis Academy have received special programmes they can train to at home in the wake of the nationwide lockdown.

The academy initially planned to start tennis coaching at the club again on 1 April but had to reassess the situation following the lockdown. Furthermore, Tennis South Africa decided to suspend all local and national tennis tournaments and leagues for juniors and seniors until 7 June.

“While we are committed to our players’ progress by keeping with their training programmes, their health and that of the public is the most important to us and we will keep acting responsibly in this regard,” said Kinetik Tennis Academy director, Jean de Lange.

At the same time, he said continuity of training is imperative because tennis is such a technical sport.

“We at Kinetik are currently investing time to develop online education content aimed specifically for our tennis parents to help them be more powerful and efficient in their role to help their children reach their tennis goals.”

De Lange said this online content will be distributed shortly, but also presented a ‘cheat sheet’ for players to train with:

  •  Keep physically fit: You can do push-ups, sit-ups and star jumps which will help with muscle endurance and strength
  •  Keep up your endurance: Put two cones 10m apart and do shuttle runs between them
  •  Keep up your speed: Use a jump rope to do some skipping (five x 100 reps)
  •  Maintain hand-eye coordination: Play against a wall at your house by doing volleys on both the forehand and backhand.

The academy hopes to start training at Fairland Tennis Club again on 20 April.
