Covid-19: Gold Reef gymnasts train at home

BERARIO – Local gymnastics club ensures their members are active during the lockdown.

Gold Reef Rhythmic Gymnastics has encouraged its members to be safe and adhere to the nationwide lockdown, but also empowered them to continue their gymnastics training at home.

Even when competing in the recent African Championships in Egypt, the International Gymnastics Federation compelled all gymnasts and officials to adhere to strict measures that would combat the coronavirus pandemic, including wearing face masks and washing their hands regularly.

When the South African team returned from the competition, they were placed in two weeks’ quarantine but before that was over the nationwide lockdown was instituted anyway.

“We as Gold Reef Rhythmic Gymnastics fully support this decision and all our coaches immediately started working on programmes that the girls can follow at home,” said coach Julene van Rooyen.

“We have made many videos for all the levels, from our six year olds to our high performance gymnasts, and are still busy making more to send out during these three weeks. These videos include warm-up exercises and apparatus skills that the girls can follow at home.”

The coach said Gold Reef had received positive feedback from the gymnasts and their families regarding the programmes they had set up, and she looked forward to seeing what else the coaches come up with to keep the gymnasts fit, strong and healthy during the lockdown.

“We have also committed to make up all the classes that were missed during this period when everything returns back to normal. We have posted some videos on our Facebook and Instagram pages to get more clubs involved in our Covid-19 fitness challenge and to share some exercises that gymnasts can do at home.”
