UJ and Wits look to improve in this year’s Varsity Cup

JOBURG – Will UJ make it two in a row or will Wits get the W this time around?

Both rugby teams of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Witwatersrand (Wits) will be looking to have a better campaign at the 2020 edition of the FNB Varsity Cup.

As the Johannesburg-based teams prepare for their opening fixtures let’s take a look back at how they did last year.

UJ finished second last in the eighth spot after only being able to secure one win in eight games. The win came against their local rival Wits and was probably the highlight of their season. The boys in orange will be looking to avenge their biggest loss of the 2019 season which came against the eventual runners-up, the University of Pretoria. The Joburg-Pretoria derby between the two will take place on 7 February and will be hosted in the country’s capital.

Wits finished better than their rivals but they too had very little to bring back from their 2019 campaign. Wits finished in sixth position having won three out of eight matches. Their wins came against the Central University of Technology, University of Cape Town and the University of the Western Cape. Their biggest loss of the season was against North-West University after losing 74–15.

Wits will be given the chance to get revenge from that massive loss at home on 24 February when they host North West.

UJ and Wits will meet in the early stages of the tournament as Wits will host their match on 10 February. Last year’s 39–16 win for UJ will motivate both teams as UJ looks for back-to-back wins while Wits is focused on getting revenge and taking the bragging rights away from the boys in orange. The match is open to the general public and will be televised on Supersport from 7pm.
