UJ’s women varsity football set on all out attack this new season

AUCKLAND PARK– The Varsity Women's football tournament kicks off this week on 19 September.

The women’s Varsity Football tournament is due to kick off in Potchefstroom on 19 September and women’s coach for University of Johannesburg (UJ) Jabulile Baloyi has called on her team to show a ruthless approach on the attack to boost their chances of success this week.

The annual event will see UJ face the University of Western Cape (UWC) in the opening game.

UWC beat UJ in 2018 in the semi-finals through penalities in the same tournament and coach Baloyi said they should keep this in mind, “Given what happened the last time we met we need to make sure we are accurate on the attack and bury the chances we create. If we are able to do that it will make things much easier for us as the competition progresses.”

The team has remained the same from last season, with only two new additions in Refiloe Maseko and Karabo Makhurubeshi, both having represented South Africa in U17 and U20 levels respectively.

She said, “While we have much the same squad as last year we don’t want to rely only on the senior players. Our culture is that we are playing a team sport so everyone has an important role to play in the team. We work as a collective, based on the premise that ‘together everyone achieves more’.”

The coach added that a winning start in the opening matches will set the tone. “If we can do well at the start it will be a boost for the team, improving the unity in the squad and keeping the players motivated.”

The tournament has eight teams, divided into two pools, UJ is grouped with UWC, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and University of Zululand.

The top two teams in each group qualify for the semi-finals, Bayloi said the other teams to watch will be Tshwane University of Technology and UWC.
