Local boxers entertain at Young Gladiators

BLAIRGOWRIE – Title fights and undercard bouts draw a full crowd to the Young Gladiators event at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre.

Local boxers held no punches back at the 10th Young Gladiators event at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre.

Whistling and cheering rang out from fans seated all around the ring, as this regular boxing event drew another full crowd on 14 July.

Alan Toweel Boxing Gym, which is based in Linden, featured five of their boxers on a day that included five undercard fights and two title fights.

Akani Phuzi successfully defended his World Boxing Association African Cruiserweight title for the second time when he beat Wilbeforce Shihepo of Namibia on points.

This was his ninth win out of as many fights in his professional boxing career.

“We are still building his career and I don’t want to push him too quickly into the international ring,” Toweel said afterwards.

“Mabe when he has 15 wins or more, even with a loss here or there we will not worry much if it is against a tough fighter. We will not rush him though.”

Toweel’s Bangile Nyangani also won the African Boxing Union SADC Mini Flyweight title fight against Oscar Richard of Tanzania on an unanimous points decision which means all three judges voted in his favour.

“Bangile and Akani both had tough opponents who kept coming forward. I am very happy with our wins.”

Sikho Nqothole once again knocked out his opponent, Thulani Gumede, while Jeffrey Magagane won on unanimous points.

“Jeffrey did well but I think he could have done even better so will work on that for next time.”

Toweel was not too worried about Cecile Maluleke’s defeat to Yaseen Domingo who proved an unstoppable force on the day.

The 11th edition of Young Gladiators is planned for October.

Toweel said while the date would still be confirmed there would definitely be title fights and as many thrilling undercard fights to keep the crowds coming.
