UJ hockey look to set the record straight

AUCKLAND PARK – UJ aims to show that they have learnt their lesson.

UJ hockey squad to use University Sport South Africa tournament to improve their skills.

The orange army of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) is getting ready to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with. They will be competing in this year’s University Sport South Africa (USSA) which will take place between 1 and 5 July.

Manager of the team Elize le Roux said they would try to implement some of the lessons learnt at this year’s Varsity Hockey tournament for an improved performance at the USSA event. “The one big thing that came out was that we need to make our opportunities count. We were close in many games, but just lacked a bit of finishing.”

In 2018, during their rebuilding phases, UJ’s men finished fifth while the women’s team finished sixth. Le Roux noted that this wasn’t their best year of competition as they had young, inexperienced players going up against some stiff competition. This won’t be the case for 2019 as they have already set goals for the tournament.

She stated, “We are working towards making the semi-finals and the ladies showed what they could do in the six-team Varsity Hockey, almost making the top four. Several results went down to the wire. For the men a top-four spot would be realistic, but we still have a relatively youthful squad as we continue to build, so we will have to work hard for this.”

Le Roux emphasised that nothing short of a team effort would be enough to reap any success for either squad.
