Youngsters have a ball
FAIRLAND – Youngsters have a ball at a tennis holiday clinic.
Youngsters had loads of fun at Fairland Tennis Club during the school holidays, thanks to the Get Set Play March Holiday Clinic.
The clinic, which ran from 18 to 20 March, saw children from two and a half years old to primary school age play all sorts of games and drills designed to improve technique.
The youngest players were aided in their understanding of the game through the help of teddy bears and fun books as they put into practice what they learnt after each lesson. The older children, who formed part of the orange, red and green ball groups, played matches with each other and completed drills.
“We wanted to get children active over the holidays and also improve their quality of tennis,” said Get Set Play owner, Rensia de Lange. “We also wanted the children to have fun and introduce tennis to children in a fun way.”
De Lange said the clinic proved successful in this regard. Furthermore, in the three days of the clinic, De Lange said she saw so much improvement in some of the regular players at the club, that it was as if they had been playing for a month.
“It’s great to see such a massive improvement. We divided the children into groups and many come from different schools so it helped that they were in a new environment and made new friends.”
Get Set Play will also host holiday clinics in June and September. Before then, players in the red and orange ball categories had tournaments at the club on 18 May and green ball players will have a tournament on 25 May.
The Tennis Night Life league is still held at the club regularly.
