UJ lose yet again

STELLENBOSCH – UJ return to losing ways after going down to the Maties 24–13.

STELLENBOSCH – After recording the first win of their 2019 Varsity Cup campaign against Wits University, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) recorded their fifth loss in six games against Stellenbosch University on 11 March.

The result (24–13) was Stellenbosch’s sixth consecutive win and kept them at the summit of the table while UJ fell to seventh, one spot lower than the previous week. Although SU won the match by eleven points, the scoreline doesn’t reflect the intensity of UJs game as they pushed the home team to the edge.

Stellenbosch started in tremendous fashion as Anton du Toit scored the first try of the game within two minutes. Fortunately for UJ, they were awarded a penalty a minute later which Mashudu Raphunga slotted. In the 19th minute, UJ’s Tyler Brown scored his team’s first try and Raphunga converted. Stellenbosch replied with another try to lead 12–10 at halftime.

In the second half, Raphunga contributed to the points tally yet again with a penalty in the 43rd minute to give the Orange Army the lead at 13–12. However, Stellenbosch took the lead yet again in the 63rd minute and extended that lead in the 68th following two penalties by Jordan Chait. He cemented his team’s win with two more penalties for the 24–13 win.

UJ now look to face the University of the Western Cape on 18 March in their fourth away game of the season.
