Former UJ star taking the rugby world by storm

AUCKLAND PARK – From almost quitting, to winning awards.

From humble beginnings growing up just outside of King William’s Town to being named the Breakthrough Player of the Year at the World Rugby Awards, former UJ rugby star Aphiwe Dyantyi hopes his story can inspire others.

Upon receiving his award he said, “I want to make an impact on someone else’s life, someone who will see my story as an inspiration to do something great out there. That is my ultimate goal.”

Dyantyi, a former University of Johannesburg (UJ) student, began to make his mark in professional rugby career in 2017 when he played for UJ’s Varsity Cup team.

In 2018 he made his international debut for the country and has gone on to feature in 13 tests and scored six tries in the process.

Dyantyi stated, “Being part of the Springboks, representing our country, it doesn’t get any better. I’m very honoured as I never imagined I would ever be the one sitting here receiving an award such as this.”

He went on to share that he hopes to continue this success. “I just want to keep on challenging myself to keep on improving and hopefully make a difference for our country.”

The road to this award was not an easy one, Dyantyi described it as ‘more than a roller-coaster’.

This is due to Dyantyi failing to make the grade in the open division during his school years at Dale College in King William’s Town. This resulted in a loss of interest in the game and gave him thoughts of quitting it all.

The Firm guidance from then UJ U19 coach Mac Masina and first team mentor Werner Janse van Rensburg saw Dyantyi’s interest in the game revived, providing the catalyst for his success at the highest level.

Dyantyi expressed his appreciation and respect for all those that helped him get to where he is today.

“I’ve been truly blessed in so many ways with the people around me who have helped me in the last few years, it’s really amazing.”

He hopes that his journey will inspire others in their pursuit of happiness and success, not just in sports but in all fields of life.
