Bears Wrestling Club wins 125 medals in their first 15 months

EMMARENTIA – Body slamming every opponent between them and the medals podium.

It has been quite a productive year for Bears Wrestling Club – they have won 125 medals in 2018.

Bears Wrestling Club was launched August 2017 and in January 2018 they moved to Marks Park in Emmarentia.

The club signed up a bunch of eager young wrestlers and promised them an unforgettable year.

Eleven months later that promised has definately been fulfilled by the club.

After competing in 20 wrestling events throughout the country, the club has won a total of 125 medals. This major achievement has given the club reason to celebrate their efforts and activities during the year.

Head coach of the club, Gerrie Grove shared some of the club’s most memorable victories this year.

He said, “We had two provincial wrestlers who represented Sentraal Gauteng Wrestling at the South African National Championships.”

This is in addition to having some of his wrestlers coming fifth at the South African President Juniors tournament hosted in April.

In the very same month, they won six gold medals and five silver and bronze medals at the Mufasa challenge in Fochville.

June and July was a highly entertaining a rewarding time as they participated in three competitions and walked away with a total of 14 gold medals, 15 silver medals and seven bronze medals.

In total, after 20 events they entered, they were awarded 48 gold medals, 43 silver medals and 34 bronze medals.

This excludes the accolades they received in certificate form, proving just how successful the year was for them.

The club recognises that this success wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for all the role players involved. They extended a big thank you to all of them.

Grove said, “Thank you very much to each wrestler, parent, manager, and coach of Bears for a fantastic year.”

The bar has been set for Bears and they hope next year will be even more fruitful than their first year.
