Tennis is on the up at Northcliff Country Tennis Club.
With the success of its September Kids Tennis Tournament on 15 and 16 September, the club aims to make the youth event happen every month.
“The quality of tennis was very good and we had a few newbies who liked our setup and plan to start lessons soon,” said coach Douglas Mumba.
The tournament saw 24 children – both boys and girls – aged four to 16 play a singles round robin tournament on the first day and then a singles knockout tournament on the second day.
Medals and trophies were presented to winners and runners-up in the different age groups.
“The highlight for me was the nerves among the children. Some couldn’t sleep the night before because they had never played in a tournament before. They came early and warmed up with me before we started playing.”
He said the youngsters responded to his instructions well and he could see an improvement in many of his players in how long their rallies were.
Furthermore, they learnt how to ignore the crowd of parents, players and club members who were watching them from outside the courts.
While Robert Mumba was the overall winner, Ashleigh Webb finished second.
Oliver Pratt won the U12 division and Alexandro Menelauowas runner-up.
Sofia Guglielmetti was the U7 winner and Gabrielle Menelauo came second.
Mumba plans to host a Kids Tennis Tournament every month.
He said the next one would probably be in early October after schools close.
The date will be confirmed.
