Wits and UJ secure their spots in the Varsity Football knockout stage

JOBURG – On to the next round for Wits and UJ.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Wits University took a step in the right direction as they both guaranteed their places in the semi-final stage of the Varsity Football competition.

UJ were held to a 1–1 draw on their visit to the University of the Western Cape (UWC) while Wits extended the University of Limpopo’s winless run by beating them 2–0.

UJ remain top of the table and Wits maintained second spot but reduced the point difference between the two teams to one point.

UJ went into their sixth game of the season against the Cape side with the expectation of bagging all three points.

Things seemed to be going their way when Keitumetse Mabothoana gave them the lead in the 37th minute but UWC came back with a goal of their own in the 66th minute.

Wits secured all three points with goals from Mahle Mtabane and Sandile Mbatha (penalty).

With one last round of fixtures to go before the semi-finals, UJ’s top spot could be taken away from them if they do not win their match against North-West University on 6 September.

Wits could fall to fourth if they don’t at least draw their match against Tshwane University of Technology.

With qualification to the next round cemented, both UJ and Wits are now playing for bragging rights and the log leader status.
