UJ student Alexa Pienaar retains her squash title

AUCKLAND PARK – UJ might have to name a court after her in the future.

University of Johannesburg (UJ) student Alexa Pienaar is adding to her legacy of one of the finest squash players in the country.

She recently defended her University Sports South Africa (USSA) squash tournament title in Port Elizabeth. She was also part of the UJ team that has now won seven straight USSA squash titles.

The 23-year-old was made to work for her title this year. In her third consecutive final, she had to overcome tough competition from Lauren Siddall of the Tshwane University of Technology.

Pienaar said, “I know Lauren has not been playing much and I hoped I could use that to my advantage. I knew it would not be easy, but I felt I could give her a good run.”

She admitted that there was a bit of a psychological battle against her rival.

“It was a big win for me because I’ve had such a mental thing about playing against her.” This is due to the fact that Pienaar had lost to Siddall a few times in the past.

The chiropractic student is now a two-time USSA champion following her win this year at the Nelson Mandela University north campus courts.

“It’s really awesome to retain the title, especially against a top player like Lauren.”
