Kenneth Ramosena to take part in Comrades Marathon and Elb Washie

NEWLANDS – Long distance runner Kenneth Ramosena will be taking part in the Comrades Marathon and Elb Washie this year.

Long distance runner Kenneth Ramosena is looking forward to running the Comrades Marathon this year.

The Newlands resident has been a long distance runner since 1995 when he took part in his first race.

Born in Meadowlands in Soweto, Ramosena enjoys spending time with his family when he’s not on the track.

He started running in a social club and then started participating in competitions. One of his most memorable races was in 2000 when he ran from Johannesburg to Magaliesburg in the PPC

Steam Challenge where he won a medal, and when he ran his first Comrades Marathon in 2001.

“Over the years I have looked up to many people. When I was younger I looked up to Zola Budd as she was the athlete that challenged most in her life. Then I followed William Motolo, a runner from KwaZulu-Natal that always had advice to fellow runners when he did his interviews.

“Today I look up to runners like David Gatebe and Caster Semenya, athletes who have played a role in sports and changed how we look at our life and challenges and still push for success against all odds.”

The longest race that Ramosena took part in was in 2003 when he attempted to run 160km.

“The first race I took part in was 10km long, which was a struggle for me at that time because I had just started running, but now 10km is just a morning jog for me,” said Ramosena.

“When training on my own I run about 40km, which is good training for me. I will be taking part of the Comrades Marathon this year which is 90km and will be taking place on the 10th of June and then the ELB Washie which is 160km and will be taking place in Port Elizabeth on the 27 and 28 July.”

This year, Ramosena is looking at doing a Sub-7 in the Comrades Marathon which is running the full race between six and seven hours.
