The best bowlers battle it out at Northcliff Bowl

NORTHCLIFF – The country's best tenpin bowling players descend on Northcliff Bowl.

Central Gauteng bowled the rest of South Africa over with its spectacular skills at the Tenpin Bowling Inter-Provincials.

Northcliff Bowl was abuzz between 21 and 25 March, with 75 bowlers from five regions taking part. These were Central Gauteng, Gauteng North, Eastern Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Midlands.

Furthermore, in order to ensure a thorough competition base that would see the best team win, many events were held in gold, silver and masters categories.

These included singles, doubles, trios, combined trios and team matches.

At the end of an action-packed week, Central Gauteng proved by far the best, winning gold and silver and coming second in masters.

“There was great spirit and camaraderie, even between opponents,” said Kiley Kassel, president of the Tenpin Bowling Association of South Africa (TBASA), and also a player for Central Gauteng.

“Most of the bowlers know each other and encourage each other, even when playing against them.”

Symone Govender of KZN Middlands proves a real threat at the tournament.

Indeed, high-fives and verbal support were offered whenever required, as players showed good sportsmanship throughout.

Kassel continued that two inter-provincials will be held this year, so Central Gauteng will have a chance to defend its title in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal, in August.

Central Gauteng’s home base, Northcliff Bowl, will host the qualifiers for the 54th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in July. The world cup will be in the USA in November this year.

Thus, it is a great time to visit Northcliff Bowl and try the sport out.

“Tenpin bowling is not just a social sport. We have a national federation (TBASA), and every province has its own leagues.”

Kassel concluded that while tenpin bowling is a technical sport that is not very easy, it is something anyone can get good at with practice, and offers exercise without requiring much physical strength or dexterity.
