Stacy Bregman judges the course well to win Ladies Tshwane Open

MORNINGSIDE – Local golfer uses her knowledge of the game to good effect, wins the Ladies Tshwane Open.

Stacy Bregman said her course management was key in winning the Canon Ladies Tshwane Open at the end of January.

The Morningside golfer, who plays at The Country Club Johannesburg, Auckland Park, was the only player to finish the tournament under-par, on a four-under 212.

This was four shots ahead of Ashleigh Buhai, and five ahead of Lee-Anne Pace.

Bregman told Caxton Local Media that making sure she did not hit into the pot bunkers was the greatest challenge at Pretoria Country Club.

“Sometimes it was hard because I wanted to go for certain spots and had to hold myself back to avoid mistakes,” she said.

Bregman’s knowledge of when to take risks and when not to in golf has not been an easy lesson learned, but the tough times have always pushed her to excel.

“My golfing journey has been up and down – lots of success and a few setbacks, and when I think about it, it has given me the drive and determination to get back on track.”

For Bregman, the greatest challenge in her professional golfing career has been to get used to all the travelling, as well as “being by myself with no help when things got tough”.

She added, “Also I would say being in contention going down the stretch and not crossing the finish line and learning to deal with the pressures [was difficult].”

Bregman said her preparation for many of the big tournaments comprised the same activities, and included playing in the pro-am event leading up to the main tournament so she could get a feel for the course.

“I think women’s golf in South Africa is definitely moving forward and in a healthy state. It’s improving every year as there is more media coverage and the tournament prize funds are increasing tremendously.”
