Stor-Age Old Boys Tens rugby festival wows fans
GREENSIDE – The reigning champions of the Old Boys Tens rugby tournament do it again, three years in a row.
The Stor-Age Old Boys Tens rugby festival at the Pirates Sports Club on the 10 and 11 November was a success.
More than 700 participants took part in more than 60 rugby games in the fourth edition of the festival.
The festival’s organiser Marcel Malherbe said the overall tournament winner for the third year in a row was Middleburg Old Boys.
“The stand out fixtures all came out of Pool A, which saw the 28-game unbeaten Middleburg Old Boys go down to St Stithians Old Boys,” said Malherbe.
He added the aim of the event was to raise funds for the Education Endowment Fund, which is a non-profit organisation founded last year with the aim to raise funds to distribute to children from disadvantaged communities. To date, the fund has funded more than 12 bursaries and educational programmes and with the hosting of another successful event, R152 000 has been raised to date.
“We need to make a difference to society by making a contribution and thus came up with the idea of an event that would not just serve to raise funds but also provide the alma mater from different backgrounds a platform to give back.”
The beer tent after-party included the prize-giving ceremony, live band performances, a screening of the Springboks vs Ireland game, and a DJ set.
Rugby fanatic Gary Sholtz said there was no particular team he supported but was impressed at how all the teams performed.
“This is my third year attending the event and I must say every year it gets bigger and more exciting,” he said. “Well done to all the teams.”
