One goal short of gold

FAIRLAND – 'The boys played their hearts out and unfortunately missed out on the gold medal,' – coach Gareth Riley.

After a near perfect hockey season, Cliffview Primary School’s 1st team hockey boys claimed the number two spot in the country.

The team earned the honour of playing in the Champ of Champs competition in Potchefstroom on 29 and 30 September after winning their league, district and inter-district competitions.

They finished in second place after a close 1–0 final against Bloemfontein’s Grey College.

“The boys played their hearts out and unfortunately missed out on the gold medal,” Cliffview coach, Gareth Riley said.

Riley said of all the teams they played against, Grey College was by far their toughest competitor. He added that the team’s best performance in the competition was in the semifinal.

“We completely dominated the other team who finished first in their pool while we finished second. It was an amazing performance from the boys.”
