Spartans and Cavaliers battle it out during a friendly match

EMMARENTIA – Under 16 rugby players gave it their all on the field during a friendly rugby match.

The Spartans Rugby Club U16 division played a tense but friendly match with a touring team from Australia, who dominated the match.

Cavaliers Rugby Academy, which is based in Sydney, won 31–0 on 6 October. Rugby fans and family members were present to offer the players their full support at Marks Park Sports Club.

Spartans Rugby chairman, Albert Bouwer said although the team didn’t perform at their best, it was a learning opportunity and the players enjoyed themselves.

“The team came to tour the country and our club was asked to play them in a friendly match. As a fairly new team, this was a great opportunity for us to play an international team. The Cavaliers played well, they play very pragmatic rugby and an attacking game which is a typical Australian rugby style,” said Bouwer.

He added the season is over for the local team, however, they have already started planning for the season next year. The team runs skills and development sessions which run throughout the year.

In addition, next year they will be going on tour from June until July and from there they will be playing matches on a weekly basis until next year October.

Spartans Rugby Club player Zack de Jager, who plays outside centre said he has been playing rugby from the tender age of seven. Even though this is his first year, it has been a great season for him and believes the team has room for greater development.

“Albert is a great coach who teaches us a lot about how to be better players and develop our skills,” said Zack.

Cavaliers Rugby Academy player, Giorgio Laventis said his team enjoyed playing and it was an overall good experience.
