Alexa Pienaar squashing her opponents

AUCKLAND PARK – Alexa Pienaar makes the squash grade.

Alexa Pienaar plans to grow her list of accolades in the beautiful yet intense sport of squash.

University Sports South Africa (USSA) squash champion, team member in the University of Johannesburg’s sixth consecutive USSA title, representative in the South African Country District, SA nationals and Open semi-finalist, all achieved in this year, and it is only July. Pienaar, UJ third year Fine Arts student said, “I was very happy and relieved to win the USSA title.” This after losing the title last year and having worked hard since then to be victorious in this year’s competition.

Pienaar believes her coaches Charlie Amm, Craig van der Wath and Mike Bester are integral parts of her success.

“I have three people who I consider my mentors and who have supported me all the way,” she added.

She views coach Bester as the person who has played one of the most important roles in her squash development and achievements. She also thanked UJ as they have supported her financially in order to play in prestigious tournaments, such as the World Student Championship.

Looking to the future, Pienaar plans to make the senior South African national team, made up of the top five squash players in the country. The team will be competing in next year’s squash world championship. In order to make the team, Pienaar plans to continue working on her game and fitness, “I need to keep working on my physical ability and stay committed. I know I will have to put in that extra little bit of work to achieve my goals.”

She contributes her recent success to her improved fitness and stamina, which has allowed her to dominate the opposition she’s faced and always come out on top.
