It’s all Von Doom with no gloom for local wrestler

CLAREMONT– Wrestler prides herself on being the first female to belong to the African Punishment Wrestling Association (APWA).

Maria Rich’s ability to endure pain is what initially inspired her to become a professional wrestler. Pushing through the pain, she became the first female wrestler who joined the African Punishment Wrestling Association (APWA) in the suburb.

The organisation is based at the Danie Van Zyl Recreation Centre and is a training ground for up and coming wrestlers.

Rich said her journey started eight years ago when she attended a show at the association with her sister. Ever since that day, she has never looked back and continued to build herself as a wrestler. The talent runs in her family – her father was also a wrestler earlier in his life.

“My wrestling name is Mia Von Doom which is loosely translated to ‘me and my big bum’. I’ve always been told that it’s rare for a lady to have a butt like mine,” joked Rich.

She said it was an awesome experience when she started wrestling against her male counterparts. However she has had her fair share of injuries, such as a broken wrist and leg. She won her first tag team title during the Winter Splash Show on 26 May this year.

“I was very excited, I couldn’t believe it and I was crying. I encourage other women to give wrestling a shot, if they can endure pain. I attempted to leave the sport for a year but couldn’t stay away. It’s not a hobby, but more of a passion,” said Rich.

Rich said her biggest fan is her daughter, who spends a lot of time with her in the gym and around other wrestlers. Mickayla Roelofse said she believes her mom is strong and really good at wrestling. One day she would also like to be a wrestler because nothing scares her.

“My favourite wrestler is definitely my mom,” said Roelofse.
