UJ aims for the win at University Sport South Africa

JOBURG – The University of Johannesburg wants nothing less than to place within the top four in the USSA tournament pools.

After finishing fifth in both the men’s and women’s divisions of the University Sports South Africa tournament last year, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has its sights set on nothing less than the top four this year.

This year’s tournament will be jointly hosted by UJ and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) from 28 June to 2 July.

Elize le Roux, UJ hockey manager, said their teams will focus on a good start due to the tricky format of the tournament. Thereafter, they will take their matches step by step.

The tournament will see teams jockeying for the top positions in their respective pools during the first three days. “One loss can count you out. You have to try to end first or second in your pool to qualify for the semi-finals,” Le Roux explained.

The tournament also serves as a qualifier for the 2018 Varsity Hockey event.

“UJ’s preparations have gone well which means some of our key players could be looking at spots in the national team for the Hockey World League as well.”
