Pirates ace serves a thriller

GREENSIDE – Jessica Kahts eases into her first title win at Pirates Tennis Club.

Jessica Kahts played out of her socks to crush her opponent in straight sets and become the new ladies champion at Pirates Tennis Club.

Watched on by an appreciative crowd in the clubhouse, Kahts put on a memorable show to win the Ladies Singles Championship, a week after she won the Ladies Doubles Championship with partner, Merryl Coaker.

Maretha Steyn fought hard, but the younger Kahts had more power in her shots, and energy to fight longer rallies.

She blasted her way to her first title at the club with a 6–0, 6–0 victory, leaving no doubt about who deserved the title.

“I stayed calm and patient,” Kahts said of her strategy.

She said it felt wonderful to win, and commended her opponent’s fighting spirit.Steyn gave praise where it was due.

“She [Kahts] is a brilliant player – I was outplayed,” she said simply, Steyn admitted she hoped to do better on the day, but will definitely work on her game before the next championship.

Club chairperson, Joss du Trevou highlighted the success of the club championships this year. “We have had a fantastic turnout, and the influx of new players has lifted the standard of tennis,” he said.
