The importance of sport for children

ROOSEVELT – Here are just a few of the reasons why your child should keep doing sport.

ROOSEVELT PARK – A recent article published by the Novak Djokovic Foundation stated that due to its vast reach, unparalleled popularity and foundation of positive values, sport is definitely one of the greatest things man has ever created.

“It’s also a powerful tool that breaks down all the barriers and helps us feel good about ourselves, both physically and mentally,” read part of the article.

Deputy principal of Roosevelt High School, Henk Fereirra, said sport was important as it taught children to work in a team.

“Also it teaches them that life is not always about winning, you have to lose with grace too,” said Fereirra. He added that apart from the physical benefits, the more a child exercised, the better they would learn.

“As a teacher, I noticed that those who do sports at school feel more comfortable to answer in class, as they know their teacher both on the field and in the classroom.”

Melpark Primary School principal, Nalini Padayachee, said the benefits of sport were really amazing.

“It cannot be contested that sport is good for children as it helps develop their social skills and it exposes the talent of children.”

Padayachee added that if a child did not necessarily do well in the classroom, they could do great on the sports field which would give them a sense of accomplishment.

Deputy principal of Linden Hoërskool, Ronelle Nell concluded that sport was important because it helped promote self-esteem along with good teamwork. “It also gives them the courage to keep on trying until they meet their goals,” said Nell.
