Soweto-born canoeist makes grade in relatively uncharted waters

GREYMONT – Canoeist Siseko Ntondini, who now lives in Greymont, is training hard to perform better than he did at the Dusi last year.

Siseko Ntondini, who has been a canoeist for about 12 years, came first in the Vaal Parys Dusi type river race on 14 January.

The Greymont resident said the race was in preparation for the Dusi Canoe Marathon taking place from 16 to 18 February.

“I’ve been training and preparing since November last year and have been training six times a week in the morning and in the afternoon,” said Ntondini.

“The Parys Dusi river race was a good experience on what we can expect in February, and I believe [the] other canoeists performed well.”

He said Euro Steel and ADreach provided him with his canoe and paddle and both sponsors gave him money for transport and to enter all the races.

“I’m so glad to have been selected by these companies, and I appreciate that I can travel and participate in other competitions. I would also like to thank my club, Soweto Canoeing, for their support,” said Ntondini.

“Canoeing has changed my lifestyle and opened doors and an opportunity to further my career. I’m currently in my fourth year at the University of South Africa and studying towards a law degree. ADreach sponsors my education.”
