A great year for Kinetik

FAIRLAND - Kinetik Tennis Academy goes from strength to strength into the new year.

Last year was another successful year of tennis for the Kinetik Tennis Academy, especially among its junior players.

Jean de Lange, the academy’s director of tennis in Johannesburg, said last year’s juniors did exceptionally well in the national tournaments.

A special highlight was when the Gauteng Central Interschool Tournament finals – the top high school tennis tournament in the province – took place last year at the Fairland Tennis Club, one of the clubs where the academy is based.

Another highlight was when one of the academy’s young players, Dylan Walters, received a tennis scholarship at Wagner College in New York. Walters was part of the St Stithians Boys’ College tennis team, where he led the squad to an undefeated season in 2015 and the number one ranked tennis school in South Africa.

“Walters will begin his first year at Wagner in the spring of 2017 and will have four years of eligibility,” said the college’s men’s tennis head coach, Jason Sinkoff.

“Dylan will be a great addition to our tennis team. We were a deep team in the fall and with the addition of Dylan, will only add to the depth of this team as we contend for a Northeast Conference championship.”

Another young upstart, Andreas Scott, was ranked first in his U14 age group last year.

De Lange, who is also his coach, said Scott had a natural ability to understand the game.

“He has immense experience both internationally and locally. When he’s in high-pressure situations he excels and performs his best,” he said.

De Lange added that Kinetik was proud of the fact that more than four of their players reached the top 10 national rankings in 2016.

The academy is looking forward to even more success this year and, under Get Set Play from next year, possibly hosting a new tournament for intermediate children who are not able to get to national tournaments.
