Come play croquet!

EMMARENTIA – Playing croquet is for everyone, according to the Croquet Club at Marks Park.

The Croquet Club at Marks Park, established for close to a year, is calling any and all to join the growing club and enjoy the sport that can either be competitive or relaxing.
The club, according to co-chairperson Henry Watermeyer, is again growing. Its 20 active members get together every Tuesday and Saturday for a few games, normally golf croquet.
“Golf croquet is a version we play where the first person to run a ball through a hoop, scores that hoop for the team who then go on to the next hoop,” he said.

Mike Cochrane played for the South African Croquet team twice and is a member at the Croquet Club.

A team can consist of either two or four players and a game, which can last between 45 and 50 minutes, is played with four balls of different colours. The objective is to run the hoop (hit the ball through the hoop) and prevent your opponent from doing the same.
“This is where the viciousness can creep in,” Henry laughed.
His wife and co-chairperson, Maria, said the game is a good stress-reliever. She added that anyone, young or old, can play.
The club was previously based at Zoo Lake. They now have two lawns and three courts, where up to 24 people can play at a time.
Henry said the sport is growing in the community and is a far less physically stressful game compared to other sports.
“You can come and have fun, or play competitively,” he said.
The Croquet Club at Marks Park is affiliated with the South African Croquet Association, which competes internationally.
