Go for gold, Blitzbokke!

JOBURG – The sevens rugby men take one step closer to the finals.

The dream of gold is alive for the South African men’s sevens rugby team, who have proven their mettle in the Rio 2016 Olympics.

After losing 12–5 to Australia in Pool B, the only game the Blitzbokke have lost in this Olympics, they made a great comeback in the quarter-final where they beat the same team 22–5. During their time in Rio, they have won against Spain 24–0 and France 26–0.

Tonight, 11 August, they will face Great Britain in the semi-finals at 8pm South African time. If South Africa wins against the Great Britain team, they will face either Fiji or Japan in the final.

However, both Fiji and Japan will prove to be tough competition as Fiji has not lost a single game and has beaten Argentina, Brazil, United States and New Zealand. Japan has only lost one game against Great Britain 21–19, therefore, tonight’s game may be a good indicator as to whether or not South Africa could bring home the gold.

To date, South Africa has not won any gold medals, only two silver achieved in swimming by Chad le Clos and Cameron van der Burgh.
