EMMARENTIA – Griquas go home empty-handed after losing to the Lions in a Currie Cup match.

The Griquas retreated to Kimberley after losing 52–37 to the Xerox Golden Lions in their Currie Cup match at Marks Park, Emmarentia.

The game on 11 June gained momentum only after the Lions were leading 21–14. The Griquas were able to rally and put pressure on the Lions, successfully winning penalties, and kicking them over the poles.

The Griquas went into the second half with high hopes, clinching seven points early in the second half of the match. Alshaun Bok from the visiting side made strong kicks across the pitch which were unfortunately not enough to secure enough territory to put the Lions under pressure. The Griquas were able to capitalise after they were awarded several penalties, but the Lions dashed all their hopes of winning when they scored three tries in the dying minutes of the match.

Griquas lock, Marius Fourie conceded that the Lions had indeed demonstrated better skill on the pitch and their presence in bigger leagues was evident in their skills. “We will go back to Kimberley, take some time to rest and continue to play rugby as best as we know it,” he said. Fourie added that they were disappointed with the loss after they had travelled so far.

Lourens Erasmus from the Lions said that they were a little worried when they went into the second half of the match with less points than their opponents. “We told ourselves that we must stick together and move forward,” he said. He added that they had enjoyed the game overall.
