Huge amount of money raised at water polo tournament

PARKTOWN – A ten-year-old water polo tournament were hosted in the name of a pupil who lost his battle against cancer. Sport combined with a good cause made for a excellent day.

Water polo and bandanas for a good cause were combined at the Indigo U15 water polo tournament at Parktown Boy’s High School. Community members came out in their masses to support the Sunflower Fund.

The tournament was held 3 to 6 March at the school and welcomed 20 schools from all over the country. Tracey Fin, responsible for marketing and charity at the school, said that turnout of supporters was amazing. “Every game was a fast-paced game of water polo, which was highly competitive,” said Fin. She added that the tournament was put together by a team of dedicated parents and a committee.

The tournament turned ten years old this year, but this year it was also held for Matthew Martins, a former Parktown Boy’s High School pupil who lost a three year battle against leukemia at the age of 18. A bandana day was held on 5 March at the tournament where people could buy bandanas to raise funds for cancer patients.

“We managed to raise about R9 400 for the Sunflower Fund through the donation of a bandana per player and the selling of bandanas to supporters,”said Finn.

The winners of the Indigo U15 water polo tournament was Clifton School from Durban.
