Terry shoots his age

EMMARENTIA – Local golfer Terry Hinton shoots his age to win the Bobby Locke Memorial Trophy.

Terry Hinton (75) shot his age at Parkview Golf Club to claim the 2015 Bobby Locke Memorial Trophy on 7 November. The event was part of the club’s annual five-day festival to honour its most accomplished member, the late Bobby Locke.

Hinton, who lives in Emmarentia, fired an 18-hole total of 75, for a net score (after deduction of his handicap) of 66. Stefan Brandt was runner-up with 67 and Allen Brown came third with 68. “One thing I am proud of is finishing on 75,” Hinton said, explaining that to shoot one’s age is very impressive in the golfing world. “The competition was fierce, as it always is at Parkview, with lots of good players. I was very fortunate.”

Hinton said that he is not improving with age. In fact, he finds the courses longer to walk, and his competitors seem younger as time goes by. “I am just a competitive person,” he said. Hinton referred to his early career as a professional soccer play, first playing for Arsenal and Watford football clubs in Great Britain, and then moving to South Africa and playing for local teams, as a period that grew his competitive nature.

Despite his age, Hinton has no intention of stopping golf soon, and still plays 10 hours per week. “I will play for a long time,” he said. “My body is holding up well.” Locke, a Parkview member for many years, won The Open Championship (British Open) four times in the ’40s and ’50s, and nine South African Opens, seven South African PGA Championships and 15 PGA Tour events.
