Bowls winter tournament

LINDEN – The winter tournament promises to bring on the heat this winter.

The Linden Bowling Club is hosting a winter tournament from 18 July to 18 August.

The tournament will take place over a period of five consecutive Saturday mornings. It attracts 24 teams from different bowling clubs around Johannesburg.

Linden Bowling Club former president Ted Keartland said, “This tournament has been running for the past 33 years and is very popular, being one of the longest running tournaments in Joburg.”

Participants will stand a chance to win prizes to the value of R40 000. Keartland encouraged people to try bowling and come and play in the tournament. “Bowling is a sport for all ages. We are trying to break the notion that it is an old marbles game, in fact we reject it and get angry when it is mentioned,” he explained.

The club is also involved in various community initiatives and hosts handicapped children from the Casa Do Sol School that come to play on Fridays after school. Keartland added, “We are planning to start a business league for working professionals, where people can come and play after work.”

Bowling is a non-contact sport that is played outdoors and anyone can play.

The club offers its facilities to companies, churches, schools and other clubs for corporate bowls days, to raise funds or to hire the hall.

It is situated in the Emma Park in Linden and has secure parking.
