GALLERY: Pirates hosts 10km run and walk

GREENSIDE – Runners and walkers in Greenside grit it out on the streets.

Pirates Sports and Rugby Club hosted its annual 10km run and walk on 5 July. Parking grounds were packed with cars of runners and walkers as 2 000 participants of all ages geared up to join in the fun and get some good exercise.

The atmosphere was pleasant and even a bit competitive. Runners lined up like sardines in a tinned can on Cruden Bay Road, just outside the club, eagerly awaiting the start at 8am – followed by the walkers at 8.10am. It was more of a light run for most, especially for those who had their families. But for runners who competed, it was a serious affair.

“The race was initially 15km but because of construction work at Emmarentia Dam, we had to change the distance of the race to 10km,” said club president Peter Botha. “The race runs through Greenside and a little bit of Parkview. It is actually a nice trail run through the golf course.”

Race director Doug Dunbar added,“We have always organised the run, it has been going on for the last 30 odd years.” He indicated that they are planning a 5km dash to “include the whole community.”

Winner of the men’s open run was Lucky Mohale (24) in a time of 00:30:50. “The race was good,” he said. “But it was tough. I came here for training.”

Liziwe Mabona (27) won the women’s open run in a time of 00:37:07.
